Muir Woods Accessibility Guide: Wheelchair, Stroller & Mobility Info

Muir Woods National Monument has about 1.5 miles of paved, wheelchair-accessible boardwalk through the heart of the old-growth redwood forest. Upper canyon trails are steep, unpaved, and not accessible.

This guide covers the accessible sections of the park, what facilities exist at the entrance, and how to get there if driving isn’t an option.

Accessible Trails at Muir Woods

Main Trail Boardwalk (Fully Accessible)

The main boardwalk is the most accessible trail in the park. It’s a flat, paved path that runs through the heart of the old-growth redwood forest.

  • Distance: Approximately 1.5 miles of paved, wheelchair-accessible trail (extending from the entrance past Cathedral Grove to roughly Bridge 4)
  • Surface: Paved and boardwalk. Suitable for wheelchairs, power chairs, and strollers.
  • Grade: Mostly flat with gentle slopes (ADA-compliant)
  • Highlights: Cathedral Grove and Bohemian Grove, two of the park’s most impressive old-growth redwood groves
  • Benches: Several rest benches along the route

This section lets you experience the tallest and oldest trees in the park without navigating stairs or steep terrain.

Beyond the Boardwalk

Trails beyond Bridge 4 become unpaved, narrower, and steeper. The Hillside Trail, Fern Creek Trail, and trails leading to Mount Tamalpais are not wheelchair accessible and require sturdy hiking footwear.

Wheelchair & Mobility Device Information

  • Manual wheelchairs: Fully accommodated on the main boardwalk
  • Power wheelchairs & scooters: Permitted on the main boardwalk. Note the path is narrow in some sections.
  • Wheelchair rentals: Not available at the park. Bring your own or arrange in advance through a San Francisco rental provider.
  • Width: The boardwalk comfortably accommodates standard wheelchair widths, though passing oncoming visitors may require patience during busy times.

Stroller Access

Muir Woods is a popular destination for families with young children.

  • Main boardwalk: Stroller-friendly. Smooth, paved surface.
  • Jogging strollers: Work well on the boardwalk and slightly beyond.
  • Beyond the boardwalk: Strollers become difficult on unpaved trails with roots and steps.
  • Tip: A baby carrier or hiking backpack is more practical if you want to explore beyond the main loop.

Accessible Parking

Muir Woods has designated accessible parking spaces near the park entrance.

  • ADA parking spots are available in the main parking lot closest to the visitor center.
  • Parking reservations are required for all vehicles. Book through GoMuirWoods.com.
  • Accessible drop-off: There is a drop-off area near the entrance if needed.

For full parking details, see our Muir Woods Parking Guide.

Accessible Restrooms

ADA-accessible restrooms are located near the park entrance and visitor center. There are no restrooms further along the trails, so plan accordingly.

Service Animals

Service dogs (as defined by the ADA) are permitted throughout Muir Woods. Emotional support animals and pets are not allowed. For details, see our Muir Woods Pet & Dog Policy.

Visitor Center

The Muir Woods Visitor Center is wheelchair accessible and features park information and trail maps, educational exhibits about the coast redwoods, a gift shop with books and souvenirs, and a small café with snacks and drinks.

Tips for an Accessible Visit

  1. Visit early or midweek. The boardwalk is narrower during peak crowds. Early mornings and weekdays offer more space to navigate.
  2. Dress in layers. Muir Woods is typically 40 to 70°F year-round, cooler on summer afternoons (often 50 to 60°F inside the grove) when San Francisco is warm.
  3. Bring water and snacks. The café has limited options.
  4. Allow extra time. The boardwalk is short, but you’ll want to stop and take in the old-growth redwoods.
  5. No cell service. Download maps and any accessibility apps before arriving.

Getting There Without Driving

If driving and parking aren’t ideal, a guided shuttle tour handles the logistics. Tours include round-trip transportation from San Francisco, park admission, and a local guide. The vans can accommodate folding wheelchairs.
